History of Kabini

Kabini’s history is enlightening! It was transformed from a hunting ground to a beautiful wildlife haven. In ancient times, it was a private hunting ground or reserve of Mysore’s Maharaja. Both Indian viceroys and Indian royalty came here for hunting purposes. However, later, when the conservation of wildlife became a necessity, the transformation of the area started! The private preserve was first converted into a sanctuary and then a stunning national park, which you can visit today.

Wildlife of Kabini

Kabini is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts with impressive and diverse species. The national park is known for sightings of elephants and tigers, usually in herds. If you are lucky, you may also spot a few leopards. The other animals you will witness here include sloth bears, gaurs, deer, and the ever-mischievous monkeys!

If you are a bird lover, you can see many here, like ospreys, kingfishers, and the national bird of India—peacocks. Take a safari here to see the rich biodiversity, which also includes sighting sleeping crocodiles on the river bank.

Zones of Kabini

  •  For ease, Kabini National Park has been divided into two main zones. These are:
  • Zone A: It has dense forest trails.

  • Zone B: It is known for showcasing the beauty of Kabini backwaters.

Three gates offer different perspectives of the park. These include:

  • Kakanakote Gate: The famous entry gate, especially for visitors coming from Mysore and Bangalore.

  • Nanachi Gate: For visitors coming from Coorg, it is the best option, and from this gate, you get to see a different side of the park itself.

  • Veeranahosahalli Gate: It is known for being the start point of canter safaris.

When should you visit Kabini National Park?

The best time for visiting Kabini National Park is from October to February. During this time, the weather is extremely pleasant, making spotting wildlife easier. These months have clear water bodies ensuring you can sight the animals with ease. The only drawback of this reason is increased prices and extreme crowds as it is the peak season.

June to September, the monsoon season is perfect for anyone who prefers fewer people. However, since it rains, the wildlife sightings will be low, but the surroundings will be beautiful.
